Historical Information

Some visitors to this website have asked about an old business that was once called by this name, but has long since disappeared. We’ve managed to track down the following information online on that business, which may be of interest:

The 1960s

The Gas Superstore was founded by Raymond Fenn, the current Managing Director’s father, in August. Then known as Quality Domestics, we started as a repair company working on washing machines, refrigeration units and electric cookers, and selling them on. He still has an active role in the company. If the company hadn’t taken off immediately, it would have been closed down as Ray didn’t have much money at the time to put into a business. Fortunately it was an instant hit with the people of Leicester and Leicestershire.

The 1970s

After just a year, the company expanded to sell new appliances as well as ones that had been refurbished. By ’73 there were three shops – Melton Road, Narborough Road and Clarenden Park. The shop on Melton Road expanded a few times as well. In 1969, the shop was just the corner shop, but in ’75 Ray bought the coach house next door so there was a courtyard as well. In ’78/79 the big house next door to that was bought and turned into a shop.

The 1980s

In ’85 the Hinckley Road shop expanded again becoming the shop you see now. There was a big opening event with drinks for members of the public.

The 1990s

We stopped selling refurbished and repaired products in 1994 moving to selling only new appliances. The company name changed from Quality Domestics to The Gas Superstore Ltd. in 1996.

The 2000s

The millennium saw the beginning of our online presence. In 2000 we bought a website called shop4fires. To begin with we only sold fires online and became the UKs No. 1 for fires online, and we can still say that today. Later in the early 2000s we set up our websites for The Gas Superstore and Fires Cookers. Our sales began to shift from being primarily in store to e-commerce sales over the course of the decade. This turned us into a national retailer. In 2005 we bought a 10,000 sq foot warehouse in Wigston. It was only big enough for 9 years before customer demand meant further expansion was needed.

The 2010s

2014 saw large expansion for The Gas Superstore. In January a £1million, 30,000sq foot warehouse was bought on the Bardon Industrial Estate in the historic mining town Coalville. George Stephenson, the very same man who invented the steam train, lived and worked in Coalville turning the whole area into the coal mining hub of the midlands. According to local lore he is also buried here somewhere within the grounds of Christ Church on London Road. Industry is coming back to the area, and we’re proud to have roots in one of the most important, yet little known towns in the UK.

2015 Saw further expansion. Our fleet of vehicles expanded to 18. In November we participated in the Black Friday sales for the first time and had a 400% increase in sales over that weekend. During December we increased our online presence both on Facebook and Twitter. We also now have a blog which is updated Tuesday – Friday, and Wednesday’s posts are dedicated to information about discount offers and sales we have on. We also went back to our roots towards the end of the year. Once again we’re repairing old appliances and selling them on at competitive prices. Our turn over each month was a milestone £1million, up by £2million over the course of the year compared to 2014.

2016 is another year of expansion. There’s an improved click and collect service and we now sell so many types of white goods that we can be best described as an “online department store”.

We have 2 showrooms based in Leicestershire one at our main shop on Hinckley Road and another at our brand new warehouse in Bardon, Coalville. Our friendly staff have been trained to provide their expert help and advice to all our customers.

In addition to our 2 showrooms, we also deliver to customers across the country in our own fleet of vehicles. This ensures we provide a first-class service to all our customers wherever they are.

We keep over £1 million of stock in our brand new extensive warehouse, reducing our delivery time and we even offer same day delivery in some areas.

We sell products to hundreds of satisfied customers every single day. And don’t just take our word for it, check out our reviews and see for yourself. Click here to see our reviews.

We have a price match guarantee and we are happy to price match any of our online competitors.
